<upd_detl>We should avoid confusing the concepts of melds and yaku. Many yaku refer to specific combinations of melds within a player's hand, but many have nothing to do with the player's hand at all.
With the "Nagashi Mangan" yaku described above, a player only needs to go an entire round without discarding simple number tiles (two through eight) in order to win with the yaku, for example.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I'm uncomfortable with this edit as I feel it's rather too focused on the specific situation with mahjong, where a chow (which I regard as a type of meld) is not a "win condition". Unless we were to create a mahjong-specific sense, I'd rather the sense was left the way it was, with "meld" still there as a gloss. After all the term is used in other games too.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I agree with Jim - in hanafuda and mekuri karuta, "win condition" does not work at all as a translation. Thanks for sharing your expertise on mahjong through so many entries though, Stephen! (not to mention the great work you're doing on Yomichan)</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful feedback. I agree now that the entry is probably fine as-is, as long as we take care to avoid using "meld" and "yaku" interchangeably on senses that are mahjong-specific (unlike this one).</upd_detl>
