<upd_detl>Not sure the merge of 徐々 and 徐々に was such a great idea.
N-grams show that it is used with に 99% of the time.
daijs has two separate entries, the one without に is marked[文].
I think that technically 徐々に is not even covered by our current entry.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I agree. 徐々 is taru adjective (not an adverb) and appears to be archaic. It's not in meikyo or the JEs. I'll bring back the 徐々に entry.
I don't know where the "soon" sense came from.
