In keeping with your practice of not favouring one variety of English, I think the BrE equivalent should ideally be given. I *think* this might be "form teacher" but I'm not 100% certain.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I does mean "being in charge of". 担任する takes an object. All the JE examples are about school classes and almost all the translation include "charge". I don't think having vs on sense 2 is helpful.
