<upd_detl>I can't recall ever seeing 下/下編/下巻 for anything other than 2- or 3-volume works, which matches up with the 上編/中編/下編 entries in daijr/s.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I agree with Paul about not seeing 下編, etc. as the 4th volume. I just did a check using 天人五衰 (vol 4 of Mishima's The Sea of Tranquility) in combination with 下編 or 下巻. No hits at all that I could find. It was usually referred to as 第四巻.</upd_detl>
