<upd_detl>I think the point is that "handicapped" is considered a taboo word today (when referring to a physical disability) and should be avoided in English, even if that happens to be the etymology of the Japanese word. 

Gloss can maybe be refined?

9月15日（水）、雫石小学校（阿部あずさ校長、児童数281人）の3年生34人が、同校体育館でキャップハンディ体験を行いました。これは、総合的な学習の時間「人にやさしいまちづくり学習」の一環で、障がい者やお年寄りの擬似体験を通じて気持ちを理解したり、街で見かけた時の声かけやお手伝いの方法を考えるため行われたものです。
雫石町社会福祉協議会職員らの指導のもと、車椅子体験や白杖体験、シニア体験を行った児童たち。

キャップハンディ体験教室とは…？
ハンディキャップを持った人の状況を疑似体験することで、その方々の置かれている状況や環境、障がいに対する理解を深め、また、障がいの有無にかかわりなく安心して暮らせる地域の環境を考えるきっかけづくりを目的とした取り組みです。（体験時間は1～2校時分必要です）
