<upd_detl>There's another use of ほら that more to something like "hey" or "say" (as in "say, what about...?").  The current meanings all have exclamation points -- I think what I'm talking about is less emphatic.

The reference link has a number of variations. I haven't  edited the meaning... I thought I'd let you choose what (if anything) you'd like to add.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Refs show it can be quite widely used, e.g. "ほら, バスが来たよ. Hey! The bus has come." I think it's all one sense.</upd_detl>
