<upd_detl>Anecdotally, the term "floating tile" has a lot of currency among English speaking players of riichi mahjong. It's also used extensively in Chiba's free (Creative Commons) book linked above, which I believe is one of (if not the most) widely read books on the subject in English.</upd_detl>
