<upd_detl>I think it's always "check A's vital signs", never "check on". Also, checking/checking on/checking of are all gerunds.
"check *of* someone's vital signs" would work but I think the original gloss was fine. We use gerunds for plenty of non-vs entries.</upd_detl>
