相見積もりは、業者に仕事を発注するときや商品購入を検討するときに、複数から同じ条件で見積もりを出してもらうことを意味します。実は日常生活でも馴染みのあることで、引っ越しやリフォーム、車の買取査定などの際に複数業者に相見積もりを取ることも多いと思います。

まず、内緒で相見積もりをすることは避け、複数業者を比較検討していることをきちんと先方に伝えます。金額を値引きするための交渉のネタとして他社の存在をチラつかせるのも、基本的にタブーです。

また検討の結果、業者や商品が決定したならば、見積もりを出してもらった業者全てにきちんとお断りと結果報告をするのがマナーです。

The Japanese word doesn't imply anybody is issuing a public bid but as I understand it, it's about directly contacting different companies and asking them for quotes.

A more literal translation of what's in daijr/jitsuyo could be something like "obtaining quotes from several companies and comparing them"</upd_refs>
