<upd_detl>I feel the evidence points to 独り女 and 独女 being two 
different words - 独り女 is not short for ”独身女性", but 独女 
is. 独り女 (but not 独女) is in nikkoku so it seems like that 
word has been around longer while 独女 is much more recent. I 
think they should possibly be split.</upd_detl>

see the URL's: I counted 12 that contain "dokujo", but non 
that contain either "hitorionna" or "dokuonna."
first page of google results, I count 4 "dokujo" in URL's, and 
again, no takers for the other 2 versions.</upd_refs>
