<upd_detl>I have not changed the above and I am not suggesting that the above is incorrect because it gets support. Maybe there should be a note of an additional reading because in the children's book written for Japanese children it give "百八つ" with the reading "ひゃくやっつ". I cannot find much support in my dictionary, nor in Rene's suggested sources, but Google gives a good number of hits [700k odd]. Some of the references shown in Google indicate the 108 rings of the bell.

I thought that I would note it, just in case it is helpful; especially as it was in a child's text book.</upd_detl>
