(笑) is oft. used in interview transcripts without being slangy. Should it be a separate entry? Or part of the other 笑い

<upd_detl>I don't think parentheses should be included in the kanji field. They don't alter the meaning in any way. It's safe to leave them out.
So I suggest dropping(w as well. I've never even seen that.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>笑 isn't really a noun so I don't think it should be moved to the 笑い entry.
If we don't want to keep it here, a separate entry is probably the best option.</upd_detl>

<upd_refs>It's really an [int], but a text-only [int] would be kind of weird.

We can let this be as-is I suppose but the issue is that while 笑 and (笑) are used and pronounced exactly the same as "w",
(笑) alone can also be used in non-slang contexts like interview transcripts (in a way I don't think "LOL" can)
We could keep 笑 here but also add it to the 笑い entry, maybe? In the transcript situation, I would expect it can't really be read as わ
ら anyway (but only わらい)</upd_refs>

<upd_detl>i'll be honest. i really dislike entries like this. parenthesized versions like (笑)and (w are not words. they're not much different from emoji. IMO, they shouldn't be headwords any more than ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ should be.

one of the original references (hatena) seems to suggest that the reading for w is simply ダブル, in which case this doesn't need to be its own entry; LOL should simply be added as a slang meaning in the entry for w[ダブル]

wikipedia lists every single possible reading as being valid for(笑)and presumably that also goes for 笑 (without the parentheses). plus, wikipedia says one way of writing わら is with the ateji 草. figuring out what 草[わら] means in a text message (etc.) without context would be tricky. but if you can't figure out what(笑)means from the meaning of 笑 then you have larger problems.

i added 笑 to the entry for わらい as io. i suggest that:
1) 笑 is now an unneeded headword because it is now searchable and the "LOL" meaning is obvious from 笑[わらい]
2) (笑)and (w are inappropriate headwords and should not be recorded
3) w should be handled as ダブル.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I agree (笑)is probably not really needed, but I disagree about (w, which I think should be added back. While (笑) or (w) are
somewhat different from "(LOL)", they're still pretty close to it. But (w is an odd one out because it's not fully enclosed, making
it more confusing. It's not the end of the world if it's left out, but I do think it should stay.

I also think 笑 should stay as a headword here as it and "w" are really treated in a way the word 笑い never is - see the survey. It's
also obvious to me that "w" is always read わら (or わらい) and never ダブル when it's referring to laughter, so just moving this sense
to w[ダブル] strikes me as a very bad idea.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I agree with Rene on "(w". The ( serves basically the same function as (). It has no meaning and it's not pronounced. I don't think it should be included here.
However, I agree with Marcus that 笑 should remain as a headword. We lose the わら reading if it's dropped from here. The same applies to w.
I think 笑 should come before w. It must be the more common form overall.
Finally, I wouldn't call this an abbreviation. 笑 and 笑い are used differently.</upd_detl>
