Sense 2 isn't limited to blogs (as a search for 炎上 on Google news reveals).


Also, 炎上 is used even if the comments are made on a completely different platform (e.g. Twitter) to the source material (see example above) so I don't think the part about being "unable to handle" the comments is necessarily true.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Not necessarily harassment. Usually it's a thing (article, statement, policy, etc.) that does the 炎上ing.
How about "stirring up a storm of criticism online"? I think it's an improvement on the gloss I came up with last year.</upd_detl>

that "goes up in flames", not its author.
I think "Internet pitchfork mob" is a good 
keyword/key phrase to include in a gloss 
though because it's a closely related
