<upd_detl>I don't think it's just Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.
I think "in our world" is implied.
I think we should drop "avatar".</upd_detl>

<upd_refs>rh avatar
the descent of a deity to the earth in an
incarnate form or some manifest shape

OK so it's usu. used spec in hinduism but I
think it's actually more fitting than
incarnation because w incarnation, I get the
feeling the Buddha has been reborn on Earth,
or at least a manifestation in a more
permanent form (Jesus being God incarnate),
while 化現 seems to include more temporary
manifestations (like say in the Greek myths)

Also I'm not convinced 化現 has to be in a
"bodily form", that's not specified in the
kokugos ("姿を変えて"). brit for example says
仏陀や菩薩が,この現実世界に惑い苦しむ生きとし生けるもの
を救うために,-いろいろな形をとって-現実の世界に現れるこ
と。 (my emphasis)
