<upd_detl>Correct gloss – “brittle” in GG5 (which we’ve rendered as
“hard caramelized sugar candy”) is an error. “brittle” is
perhaps accurate for “caramelo” in Portuguese (it just means
“caramel”, including soft and hard – see relevant WP/WT
page), but in Japanese カルメ焼き refers instead to a foamy
candy.
(All Google image hits I saw were for the foam candy, and
all references other than GG5 give only this sense, with 研
究社中 giving correct “foam candy” one.)
There are various English names (and a WP article which
cites the Japanese candy!), so I’ve given top English
glosses and a brief explanation, since it varies by dialect
(and I didn’t recognize any word).</upd_detl>
