<upd_refs>https://www.japantimes.co.jp/culture/2018/05/02/films/feudal-era-japans-talent-agencies/
Japanese show business definitely has a feudal side. Talent agencies control their tarento (talent) much in the way the daimyō
(feudal lords) controlled the samurai in their clans, supporting their livelihoods in return for absolute fealty. And just as
samurai were expected to stay with one clan their entire lives, talents typically find it hard — if not impossible — to leave
their agencies.
This unequal relationship, observes veteran entertainment reporter Harumi Nakayama, is deep in the DNA of the entertainment
industry.
“It’s always been like a factory,” she says. “It doesn’t nurture talents as individual artists. Instead, they’re
interchangeable. In Japan you can make your professional debut just by being cute.”

THE MEDIA BUSINESS: ADVERTISING; As Publicis reorganizes, it loses one of its top creative talents to a competitor, Omnicom.

Personnel cutbacks were severe, creating a vast pool of unemployed talents; a situation that resulted in the mushrooming of
modular specialties such as the media buying service and the TV production house.

For the powers at the Creative Artists Agency, Hollywood’s pre-eminent talent representative, the coming blockbuster
“Transformers” has already brought a lesson in the cold-hearted ways of corporate entertainment.
... In that time, it not only raided competitors for agents and talent in the movie and television businesses ...
And its success or failure is likely to tell whether talents as varied as Will Ferrell, Tom Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer, Derek
Jeter or Norah Jones — Creative Artists clients all — will maintain their leverage against evolving media giants ...

But Mr. Spector’s main claim to fame may simply be his durability. He is the last of the big “gaijin tarento,” or foreign
talents — Japanese-speaking foreigners who became celebrities here in the boom years of the 1980s simply by sounding off about
life in Japan, and feeding the country’s narcissistic fascination with how the world views it.</upd_refs>
