<upd_detl>I don't think we need x-refs for the eras. They're easy to look up if people want to know more. 幕末 isn't even mentioned in the gloss.

<upd_detl>I prefer "since". Makes it clear that it includes Japanese up to the present day.
For sense 2, Wikipedia says "明治維新を中心に、江戸後期・幕末から明治初中期". Daijr gives the period as "明治期あるいは明治・大正期" but also says "さらに幕末期を含めていうこともある". Not sure how we want to gloss it.</upd_detl>
