<upd_detl>It was in the text which I was reading as a simple quotation, i.e., 「何か用かい？」. Your [A] link provides some examples of usage. Google hits seems to be very high, with various endings in addition to "かい？", for example, "ですか". However, although the number nearly reach 1m, there are examples shown which do not quite fit the search. The reading seems to be "なにか" and not "なんか".</upd_detl>
