<upd_detl>This shell habitat is mainly around Japan and the shell is well reported in Japanese literature due to its resemblance with abacus' stones. The present translation "periwinkle" refers to Littorina littorea which is a European shell
of different shape, different color and different family.
In addition "periwinkle" without any mention could also refer to the flower Vinca major or Vinca minor and the associated color, and this has absolutely no relationship to Umbonium costatum and 細螺 きさご;きしゃご

In addition, there is an old Japanese reading of 細螺 which is しただに. I am not sure about the dictionary's policy as to old Japanese readings, so I leave it to the editing person.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>Yes, しただみ is a recorded old reading, and it's also written 小羸子. I think it's best in its own entry as it would be complicated to handle here.</upd_detl>
