<upd_refs>all the kokugo definitions seem to match the "outing; hike" definition pretty well, but google images are all clearly sense 1. I 
asked a native speaker in her 30's and she was perplexed by the kokugo definitions and suggested it was maybe dated/archaic.</upd_refs>
