<upd_detl>I don't think the comparison with 国防省 works that well. 国防省 is 国防 + 省 and is applied widely. 官房長官 is very specific to Japan and is regarded as an abbreviation of 内閣官房長官, i.e. 内閣官房 + 長官. I'm not aware of 官房長官 being used to describe posts in other governments (I can't really comment on Brazil.)</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>I was just converting the "in Brazilian Japanese" note to a dialect tag. But it looks like it's used in standard Japanese as well.
Do we actually need this sense? Presumably Brazil isn't the only non-Japanese country for which "chief of staff" is translated as "官房長官"?</upd_detl>
