"幣原内閣でも留任したが公職追放となった"

this doesn't refer to a single purge but was, as daijs puts it, a mechanism (処置) for removing somebody from office (etc.) 
and ban them from participating in politics (etc.) again.</upd_refs>

方政界,財界,言論界に拡大され,1948年5月までに追放者
は20万名を超えた。しかし1951年11月までに17万5000余名
が解除。
