<upd_detl>A bit specific, but it looks like there is a clear definition. Apparently a horse has a good chance of winning a race if it is in 3rd, 4th, or 5th place in the middle of the race.

I know nothing of horse races though. This is based on the sources mentioned above.</upd_detl>
