Daijisen says: 山道をのぼりつめて、下りにかかる所。山の上り下りの境目。
wikipedia says: 山道を登りつめてそこから下りになる場所

Doesn't this mean that 峠 isn't the whole mountain pass but only the peak of it? ( the red point in the image below)

<upd_detl>I'm not sure I liked the "peak" in sense 1 before but I think "peak of a mountain pass" doesn't really work. It's the saddle, as the images shows.</upd_detl>
