<upd_detl>the "エロ" search isn't evidence it means "threesome", I just wanted to demonstrate that it's not always 2 parents with the child in between, that it's wider than 
that, that it can refer to any formation of 3 people sleeping next to each other.
"as 川の字で寝る" wasn't an example, it's the form it almost always appears as. all the results on the first page of google are variations 川の字で寝る or 川の字に寝る
I don't think "making a 川 pattern" is a great note. I don't quite understand what it means.</upd_detl>

FWIW I did see some cases of 川の字 being used as the label for the sexual activity, hence my suggestion of a sense for that.</upd_detl>
