Used by teacher in class, and gets a substantial number of hits. Probably more used in speech (since とうじょう is ambiguous, while つつ is unambiguous and 〜状（じょう） is productive), while とう more used in compounds such as 円筒状（えんとうじょう）.

<upd_detl>I suspect it's often/usually とうじょう in botanical contexts.</upd_detl>
<upd_refs>GG5 only has とうじょう, and the kokugos all have とうじょうか for 筒状花.
