<upd_detl>i think there's a slight distinction in that your local plastic surgeon's office is a 'private practice' but he is not a 'general practitioner'.  unless i'm mistaken, "general practitioner" isn't actually in gg5 (or eijiro, etc.) as a translation of 開業医.  what i see is
 一般[全科]開業医 a general practitioner (略: GP).</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>ルミナス和英辞典 has "general practitioner" as its gloss for 開業医. None of the refs I looked at indicated that 開業医 meant specializing in a particular branch. I'm quite happy to put GP back into a sense of its own.</upd_detl>
