<upd_detl>I think the extended usage is worth recording. I've listed a few websites in the refs that use 満タン in non-liquid, non-tank-related contexts on their support pages, which suggests it's at least somewhat mainstream.
The original usage of 満タン extends to filling more than just tanks too--it can be used to describe any container holding liquid at full capacity (based on the definitions in Kojien and Daijisen).
To resolve this, I'd like to propose splitting this entry into two senses. That way we can still cover expressions like 満タンで (with a full tank) that do specifically refer to a full tank of gasoline.
By the way, the gloss "filling up the tank" seems off to me because you say 満タンにする, not 満タンをする, so I've removed it.</upd_detl>
