The absolute majority of times when I hear somebody use the word セレブ they aren't actually referring to celebrities.</upd_refs>

<upd_refs>The "wealthy socialite" gloss was added by Adam Rice, a respected JE translator, in 2007. He quoted a passage from the Wiki page (now removed): and from the gogen-allguide.com entry: He added: "On Japanese television, "セレブ" seems to be almost exclusively used in the sense of "Wealthy socialite" rather than the original English sense of the word. I have even seen the term used to refer to New York socialites (unfortunately I don't have a reference for that)."
I think it can be covered by a simple addition to the new sense #2.</upd_refs>
