「漢」を「おとこ」と読ませる例は昔からありますが、力強い・頼もしいなどの属性を強調して使うようになったのは、比較的最近でしょう。笹原宏之氏は〈近年では「漢」と書いて「おとこ」と読ませる例が流行（はや）っているようで、そこには熱血漢のニュアンスが強く打ち出されている。〉（『訓読みのはなし』光文社新書p.211）と述べています。
