<upd_detl>It might be worth adding another meaning to represent the use of the word to show that an object is making a noise -- which isn't really "to say" -- as in お湯が沸いてやかんがピーピーいっている. I don't know if "to make a sound" or "to make a noise" quite works.  Perhaps you have a better idea? :-)</upd_detl>
