<upd_detl>I don't think we can consider the "のもとに" in "彼は今月初めまで私たちのもとにいました" an expression. Structurally, it's no different from の上に, のそばに, の右に, etc. I was going to suggest linking the sentence to 1260670 (sense 5), but I noticed that the entry doesn't include 下 or 許 in the kanji field. It might be better to move that sense to 2004390 (下[もと]) and add 元 to the kanji field, but then there'd be overlap. It's a bit of a mess.
---
In my view, even the first (and more useful) sense is adequately covered by the 下[もと] entry. I don't think の下に is a particularly special construction (and the grammar is straightforward). We don't have の下で, which is also common.
I'm in favour of dropping this entry altogether.</upd_detl>

<upd_detl>This entry has an interesting history. It began pre-2000 as:
元に [もとに] /(exp) (uk) under the supervision of/on the basis of/
In 2007 Rene changed it to の下に, quoting Daijr/s for the kanji and noting that it was "more idiomatic" that way.
Shortly afterwards Paul Blay added の許に and split the senses.
I've come around to the view that this is probably adequately covered by 2004390 (下/許/もと). I've reindexed that sentence to the 元/もと sense as Robin suggested, and I'll touch up 2004390 a little.</upd_detl>
