<upd_detl>(a) I think Hendrik got the wrong reading of 表す when he put this and 使って表す in in 2010.
(b) I think it's useful. GG5 has it as an example under the あらわす entry: "y を x を用いて表す give ［express］ y in terms of x."
(c) as for "expession", I think it's in the class of 複合動詞 where the first verb part is in て form. We usually tag these as "exp", probably to distinguish them from the 思い出す variety.</upd_detl>
