<upd_detl>kenkyusha gives the added reading which matches the meaning of the text which I was reading. Whilst a child may wait "eagerly" for a birthday, the context of this expression seems to relate to the impatience of waiting for anything; even the inevitable undesirable thing that one just wants to see over and done with.</upd_detl>
