<upd_detl>Back in 2007 when Paul Blay proposed ううむ, Rene asked "any chance this is related to うむ(int) or ううん(int)?" Things come round.
Looking at the candidates:
うむ. GG5 has (1) wh-huh; yeh; yep; yes; all right; (2) hum; hmmm; well. Daijr has 「 うん 」に同じ
ううむ. We have "erm; hurm"
うん. We have "yes; yeah; uh huh". GG5 has (1a) yes; all right; hm! (1b) hum; hmmm; well. (2) a moan; a groan; a grunt (of pain) 中辞典 has "uh-huh; yeh; yes; (all) right; okay; 〈気がつく〉 uh; I see"
ううん. We have (1) no; (2) er, well, ...; (3) groan. GG5 has (1) no; uh-uh; uh-unh. (2) er; hmm; ugh; oof. (3) oh; aha; uh-uh
It seems to me that ううむ, うん and うむ could well be merged. From that leading "no" sense it's hard to see ううん fitting in to a merge.</upd_detl>
