ざる is by no means dead or archaic, although it seems to be
used more in written than in spoken Japanese.
考えざるを得ない, for example, is a common expression that means
"can't help thinking about", and the 〜ざるを得ない form in
general is still commonly used.
許すべからざる (unforgivable) is another wonderful use of this
suffix.
There should definitely be an edict entry for this.
Something like:
ざる /(adj-pn, suf) not, unable to be/
