Re: [edict-jmdict] Suggestions to Improve Layout

Dear Arlen et. al.,

For me the cookie issue is a non-problem, the answer to which I knew pretty much before I posed it.
(I didn't know you had no access to cookies, just thought cookies would of course be server-specific).

I wouldn't give the matter any thought - because most users don't bound from mirror to mirror as I do (US EDRG has been a target of DOS in the past but OK now. Needed to switch to the Canada mirror and just did so yesterday on a lark to see if it was "healthy" and thereby discovered the cookie issue.)

Regarding my nature, which is more than likely misunderstood or even resented by some members of the group, I am a problem identifier and a problem solver. Whenever I was invited into a dysfunctional environment - school, corporate, etc., it was my job to identify and fix what was wrong - not to admire the carpets and the wallpaper. I never was, nor am I now, interested in being "popular" at the expense of the truth. I can assure all that the best way I know to serve the project is to continue to be a Royal Pain in the buttocks and persist until a perceived problem is solved - and for that I am eminently qualified.  So that is how I see myself in this project - Point up all that I see or believe to be improvable.

Problem I identified a year and a half ago but still remains unattended to: "Where is the database"?  Everyone was working on one at one time, "posing" with lots of computer jargon and all appearing quite professional in the process, but I'm sorry to point this up. There is no database.  Correct me if I am wrong but talk doesn't quite cut it in the corporate environment or for that matter in real life.

(In rebuttal I am sure I will be reprimanded for my BA but in the end I only care about one thing: We need a proper database. And thus far I don't see one. To be continued ...

However, regarding the cookie's being server specific and hence difficult to transfer, better not to waste your time or Jim's. We have bigger fish to fry. I have already forgotten about it. Thanks for your kind response, Arlen.

Unfortunately, not simply. Cookies are such that they are restricted (and located) based on the site's hostname: different mirrors with different hosts means we can't access the cookie for one from the other one.

(I'm thinking ways to solve this problem: it's just a concept, but you could - say - have the links to mirrors include (in the query string) the options [which the target mirror then sets]. Or, if not in the normal links, some specific ones for this purpose -- say, on the customize page, links to the varying mirrors to a specific page which then sets the cookie options as on the query string. Jim?)

Cheers,
Arlen
