The Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group was set up at in 2000 at Monash University in Australia by Jim Breen, who at that time was an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Information Technology. The main reason for establishing the Group was to have a vehicle which could hold the copyright for the various dictionary files Jim and others had compiled, and which could receive and spend funds in a tax-effective way for the improvement of the files and associated software. The group has a WWW page.

While it was called a "Group", in effect it was initially just Jim alone. Since then it has developed into an informal team of people scattered all over the world who take part in the editing of the dictionaries and the development and support of the software systems,

In 2006, Jim registered the "edrdg.org" domain and rented a cloud server to be a host site for EDRDG activities.
