虎落
もがり

  Comments:
Thanks. Very interesting comments.
5. A* 2025-09-21 09:11:02  Sombrero1
  Refs:
I find it interesting that koj marks [ateji], when both of the kanji are incompatible with the reading.
I checked in kanwas as well, but, as expected, to no avail.
旺文社 全訳古語辞典, 三省堂 全訳読解古語辞典 and 角川古語大辞典 all remark nothing in that regard (for this 虎落, not the extortion one).
But funnily enough weblio古語 notes that the second sense for this entry (aligns with our second sense) uses 虎落 as 借字, which again doesn't really seem to make sense.

The extortion 虎落 clearly comes from the 熟字訓 verb 強請る(also written 虎落る), whose etymology itself is entirely unclear it seems.
The kanji 虎落 for the bamboo fence sense are taken from chinese, where it also referred to such a fence
(Nikkoku: (「虎落」は、中国で粗い割り竹を組んで作った垣のこと。用字はその転用)
(Kanjipedia: 「虎落」は漢名からで、トラをふせぐ柵の意。
(weblio古語: 「虎落」は借字。「虎落(こらく)」は、中国で、割り竹を連ねて作る垣のこと。)

Now further, daijisen and kadokawakogo both point out that もがり(bamboo fence) is "語源未詳" / "語義未詳".
Nikkoku gives three hypotheses for etymology but doesn't point in any particular direction, and if we can trust its sentences, the first attested example of もがり (bamboo fence) being written as 虎落 is from 1548.

So this もがり is in all likelihood not related to the 連用形 of the verb 強請る・虎落る, with a *熟字訓* reading.
(This is further supported by nikkoku having もかり, as an earlier form for the bamboo fence, in its examples)

Attested examples for the verb もがる date back far further, into the heian period (nikkoku).
So the only logical explanation to me would be that the ateji for もがり(bamboo fence), 虎落, are loaned characters from chinese for this meaning (hence weblio古語 using 借字 and not 当て字), but the actual ateji reading is the *already* 熟字訓 reading based on the verb もがる.

The other, less satisfactory, explanation would be that noone really knows and this is all gibberish, but whatever.

.

Is "center of the board" fine? It specifically means the most central point exlcluding the points aroudn it, so I am not sure I need to specify, but usually go players who are not beginners say tengen anyways in English.
Also I put the order like this because tengen will mean the center of the board way more than it will refer to the title or its tournament

一方石に死になし
いっぽういしにしになし
1. [exp] {go (game)}
▶ one weak group can defend
▶ one group of weak stones doesn't die

History:
9. A 2026-02-11 00:19:17  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Since I approved the entry last year, I'm not inclined to remove it now.
My comments from several years back about cutoff counts for mahjongg terminology were perhaps a bit strong. I think we can afford to be a bit more liberal with terminology in a tagged area.
8. A 2026-02-10 18:06:12  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think it's a serious problem with the JMdict contribution model that the barrier to entry for contributing is so high. Imagine if it only took 5 seconds for a user to painlessly send a request for a "一方石に死になし" entry or to report an error in an entry. If we received thousands of contributions a day, the frequencies could guide us to the areas that deserve the most attention. But that's just my theory; who knows how well it would actually work in practice.

At any rate, editorial decisions aren't influenced by ultimatums. If we decide that a proposed entry doesn't make the grade, we'd rather not argue endlessly about it.
7. A* 2026-02-10 13:49:49  Adrian Grana <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I would find it really unfortunate if Go terms under the go tag were removed simply for being “too obscure.” Isn’t that exactly the purpose of having the tag in the first place—to allow specialized terminology to exist without being judged by the standards of general-use vocabulary?

I can assure you (and Jim) that everything I’ve added recently is widely known and commonly used within the Go community. Moreover, there is no truly authoritative bilingual resource for Go terminology. Existing English materials are either incomplete or inaccurate, and most detailed references are only in Japanese. JMdict has always stood out to me precisely because it accommodates a broad range of vocabulary, including domain-specific terms that other J–E dictionaries don’t cover.

I’ve put a lot of time into improving the Go entries—polishing existing ones and adding missing but very common terms—with the goal of creating a reliable reference section that benefits players, translators, and learners alike. But if entries begin to be deleted on the basis of n-gram counts or because they’re unfamiliar outside the Go world, despite being standard within the domain, then I honestly I will stop contributing entirely.

>> Would I be correct to assume that a lot of [mahjong terms] may be too obscure for a general purpose dictionary? If so, are there any criteria that these terms should fulfill before I submit them for review?

>> A 2022-04-06 04:55:42 Jim Breen
>> We have about 260 entries with mahjong tags, and many of those have n-gram counts in the low 100s. I think a cut-off of about 200 in the n-grams is appropriate, provided it doesn't mean a huge influx.
  Comments:
I think this phrase is too obscure for JMdict; I'd delete it.

I agree with Jim's reasoning below. A [proverb] tag would be appropriate for a phrase commonly used metaphorically (e.g. comparing an underdog to a weak group of go stones) by Japanese speakers generally (as opposed to Go-players exclusively).
5. A* 2026-02-08 05:27:13  Adrian Grana <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
"" they are not exactly "well-known pithy saying[s]"

But everyone in the go world knows them, so they are "well known". I mean if you are trying to reason they should be well known among the larger population than we should start removing the tag from expressions like 天網恢恢疎にして漏らさず, 9/10 people I talked to have never heard that and I think you would agree it's a proverb, even if it's not well known?

"or "stating a general truth or piece of advice"."

二目の頭は見ずハネよ tells you to always play a hane on top two stones, that's both general truth, and a piece of advice

Furthermore, some of these go proverbs are in proverb dictonaries of general Japanese proverbs, like this one: 故事ことわざの辞典一方石(いっぽういし)に死(し)になし囲碁のことば。生き死にのあぶない石でも、一箇所だけならなかなか死なないものであるということ。 So in light of all that, why wouldn't JMdict consider it a proverb?
