| Refs: | I find it interesting that koj marks [ateji], when both of the kanji are incompatible with the reading. I checked in kanwas as well, but, as expected, to no avail. 旺文社 全訳古語辞典, 三省堂 全訳読解古語辞典 and 角川古語大辞典 all remark nothing in that regard (for this 虎落, not the extortion one). But funnily enough weblio古語 notes that the second sense for this entry (aligns with our second sense) uses 虎落 as 借字, which again doesn't really seem to make sense. The extortion 虎落 clearly comes from the 熟字訓 verb 強請る(also written 虎落る), whose etymology itself is entirely unclear it seems. The kanji 虎落 for the bamboo fence sense are taken from chinese, where it also referred to such a fence (Nikkoku: (「虎落」は、中国で粗い割り竹を組んで作った垣のこと。用字はその転用) (Kanjipedia: 「虎落」は漢名からで、トラをふせぐ柵の意。 (weblio古語: 「虎落」は借字。「虎落(こらく)」は、中国で、割り竹を連ねて作る垣のこと。) Now further, daijisen and kadokawakogo both point out that もがり(bamboo fence) is "語源未詳" / "語義未詳". Nikkoku gives three hypotheses for etymology but doesn't point in any particular direction, and if we can trust its sentences, the first attested example of もがり (bamboo fence) being written as 虎落 is from 1548. So this もがり is in all likelihood not related to the 連用形 of the verb 強請る・虎落る, with a *熟字訓* reading. (This is further supported by nikkoku having もかり, as an earlier form for the bamboo fence, in its examples) Attested examples for the verb もがる date back far further, into the heian period (nikkoku). So the only logical explanation to me would be that the ateji for もがり(bamboo fence), 虎落, are loaned characters from chinese for this meaning (hence weblio古語 using 借字 and not 当て字), but the actual ateji reading is the *already* 熟字訓 reading based on the verb もがる. The other, less satisfactory, explanation would be that noone really knows and this is all gibberish, but whatever. . |
