  Comments:
Judging from the few references, it could probably be added as a reading in the ういっす entry.
Could also then use the occasion to hide a few readings there.

  Comments:
It can also be slurred into 「うす」 and have a variety of meanings. Not many references as it's mostly in very informal speech, but I found a HiNative chat about it. Might be worth a separate entry.

daijs does say 「押忍」とも当てて書く。
And it's worth pointing out it doesn't seem to have been uk at the time the ngrams were compiled either, some 15 years ago.

Koi, Daijisen, GG5 - none show any kanji.
  Comments:
Obviously it's becoming fashionable in places like Twitter to use kanji for this. The arrival of IMEs has encouraged this.
A pity vwe can't tag as "formerly uk".

一方石に死になし

▶ one weak group can defend
▶ one group of weak stones doesn't die

History:
9. A 2026-02-11 00:19:17  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Since I approved the entry last year, I'm not inclined to remove it now.
My comments from several years back about cutoff counts for mahjongg terminology were perhaps a bit strong. I think we can afford to be a bit more liberal with terminology in a tagged area.
8. A 2026-02-10 18:06:12  Stephen Kraus <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think it's a serious problem with the JMdict contribution model that the barrier to entry for contributing is so high. Imagine if it only took 5 seconds for a user to painlessly send a request for a "一方石に死になし" entry or to report an error in an entry. If we received thousands of contributions a day, the frequencies could guide us to the areas that deserve the most attention. But that's just my theory; who knows how well it would actually work in practice.

At any rate, editorial decisions aren't influenced by ultimatums. If we decide that a proposed entry doesn't make the grade, we'd rather not argue endlessly about it.
7. A* 2026-02-10 13:49:49  Adrian Grana <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I would find it really unfortunate if Go terms under the go tag were removed simply for being “too obscure.” Isn’t that exactly the purpose of having the tag in the first place—to allow specialized terminology to exist without being judged by the standards of general-use vocabulary?

I can assure you (and Jim) that everything I’ve added recently is widely known and commonly used within the Go community. Moreover, there is no truly authoritative bilingual resource for Go terminology. Existing English materials are either incomplete or inaccurate, and most detailed references are only in Japanese. JMdict has always stood out to me precisely because it accommodates a broad range of vocabulary, including domain-specific terms that other J–E dictionaries don’t cover.

I’ve put a lot of time into improving the Go entries—polishing existing ones and adding missing but very common terms—with the goal of creating a reliable reference section that benefits players, translators, and learners alike. But if entries begin to be deleted on the basis of n-gram counts or because they’re unfamiliar outside the Go world, despite being standard within the domain, then I honestly I will stop contributing entirely.

>> A 2022-04-06 04:55:42 Jim Breen
>> We have about 260 entries with mahjong tags, and many of those have n-gram counts in the low 100s. I think a cut-off of about 200 in the n-grams is appropriate, provided it doesn't mean a huge influx.
  Comments:
I think this phrase is too obscure for JMdict; I'd delete it.

I agree with Jim's reasoning below. A [proverb] tag would be appropriate for a phrase commonly used metaphorically (e.g. comparing an underdog to a weak group of go stones) by Japanese speakers generally (as opposed to Go-players exclusively).

"" they are not exactly "well-known pithy saying[s]"

But everyone in the go world knows them, so they are "well known". I mean if you are trying to reason they should be well known among the larger population than we should start removing the tag from expressions like 天網恢恢疎にして漏らさず, 9/10 people I talked to have never heard that and I think you would agree it's a proverb, even if it's not well known?

"or "stating a general truth or piece of advice"."

二目の頭は見ずハネよ tells you to always play a hane on top two stones, that's both general truth, and a piece of advice

Furthermore, some of these go proverbs are in proverb dictonaries of general Japanese proverbs, like this one: 故事ことわざの辞典一方石(いっぽういし)に死(し)になし囲碁のことば。生き死にのあぶない石でも、一箇所だけならなかなか死なないものであるということ。 So in light of all that, why wouldn't JMdict consider it a proverb?
