| Comments: | Would like to point out that this has higher priority tagging than the actual する, and is thus displayed first when searching for plain する on sites like jisho.org. On the other hand, lorenzi's jisho e.g. includes various frequency data together with the jmdict tagging to circumvent this issue. That said, maybe this can still be addressed in JMdict itself somehow. |

| Comments: | I somewhat tentatively propose this entry for deletion. Rationale: * no other dictionary I checked seems to have this as an expression entry, or even to mention it in an example under 自信 * very few google hits, and most of those seem to be where it's used as a survey/multiple choice answer option, like 「自分に自信があるか否か」を20〜50代の有職女性に調査したところ、実に62%が「自信なし」 which I think is just あり/なし being used in their usual way, rather than 自信なし being an expression with a particular meaning * 自信なし to me is more like "unconfident" than "unsure", so the definition as it stands is a bit misleading compared to if the user looked up 自信 and なし separately (unless this really does have a different nuance from base 自信, which I didn't find any evidence of) Kyoto/Melbourne ngram stats, which I think somewhat back up the "this isn't actually an expression" theory: 自信 306632 94.3% 自信なし 1015 0.3% 自信がない 17374 5.3% |

| Comments: | I think "interrupt" and "cut into (a conversation)" are better as translations for 口を挟む or 言葉を挟む. I've added some more glosses. I've made a separate sense for "catch (a finger, etc.)" (as in meikyo). It looks a bit out of place in sense 1. Added a "to harbour" sense (in GG5 and daijs). The sentences need updating (only 3 are indexed). |

| Refs: | The Japanese Idol Known For Hating Her Fans?? | Shimazaki Haruka (Paruru) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O-SDxk58HE (2:10 ): "塩対応 directly translates as 'salty response', you can think along the lines of a 'cold or unfriendly' response too, something you would never usually associate with mainstream idols. That's because what is usually expected is 神対応, or 'God-level care and responsiveness'". https://mainichi.jp/articles/20250203/k00/00m/010/169000c Of a prime minister's comments(quoted speech): 「塩対応の答弁で本当に残念。首相は納税者に寄り添う気持ちがあるのか。このまま123万円で突き進むのなら、当然我々は予算に賛成できない」。国民民主の榛葉賀津也幹事長は1月31日の記者会見で語気を強めた。 ============= A *whole* bunch of examples with 塩対応, maybe playing a bit fast-and-lose with the nuances though: 「cold response」「distant」「standoffish」「aloof」「icy」「cold shoulder」 https://nativecamp.net/blog/20231101-cold_response Please don’t be distant. (questionable translation, but I get the idea) 塩対応しないでください。 Chatgpt: 👉 In practice, it describes a cold, curt, unenthusiastic, or unkind way of dealing with someone—the opposite of warm hospitality or friendliness. Idol/fandom culture: 「昨日の握手会、〇〇ちゃんの対応が塩だった…」 “At yesterday’s handshake event, 〇〇 gave me a salty response…” Customer service / workplace: 「あの店員、塩対応すぎるだろ!」 “That clerk’s attitude was way too cold!” Everyday interactions: When someone replies briefly and disinterestedly in LINE or in person, you might say they’re giving you a 塩対応. So it’s a pop slang term, most natural in casual conversations, online discussions, or when talking about idols, service interactions, or dating/relationships. Do you want me to also give you the nuance difference between 塩対応 and English "salty" (since they’re not quite the same)? |
|
| Comments: | If someone has the latest sankoku, this is apparently now listed. Mainichi has a whole article on it now, says it was popularized by the AKB48 idol Paruru in particular: アイドルの対応ぶりに由来国語辞典も徐々に採録 新語として定着進む「塩対応」 https://salon.mainichi-kotoba.jp/archives/202448 The article was a reaction to the use of 塩対応 to describe a prime minister's comments: 「ゼロ回答とは言わないが、塩対応だ」. You can see the direct link to brevity ("not zero, but 塩対応"). The idol Paruru giving only a 1 minute speech, instead of the common 4 minute speech, was also 塩対応. I think the lit "salty response" has a different nuance in English. "giving the cold shoulder" probably works only in human-relationship contexts. Google "塩対応して" or "塩対応して" site:x.com for [vs]. Too new for the ngram database. "cold reception" and "chilly reception" might feel redundant, but I think "cold" is much harsher, and it really just depends on context in which 塩対応 appears. Few readers will intuit "chilly reception" from "cold reception" (I didn't, it was an LLM suggestion). |

|
| Comments: | Kojien has 5 senses, but that's overkill. The 2 that are also in other references are enough, although the archaic one could be split perhaps. Unabridged nikkoku also has a third sense, but I don't see it in other refs so I have left it out for now. I have preliminarily added daijisen's notes |
