| Comments: | I don't like calling it "first move" because that's not how Go players refer to it in either Japanese or English, and it's potentially misleading. "First move" might be interpreted as the very first move of the game, which is not what "sente" typically refers to in Go. That meaning is already captured by the general definition [1]. In Go, "sente" usually refers to a move or sequence where the player takes the initiative and compels the opponent to respond. Once the sequence ends (which may involve more than just one move), the player who initiated it retains control of the flow of the game—they are free to choose where to play next, as they are not under pressure to respond. This contrasts with "gote", which refers to a move that the opponent can ignore, leaving the initiator in a reactive position. Also for uniformity reasons the go meaning should be in it's own definition to make use of the tag |

| Comments: | "sign and seal" seemed somewhere between a noun and a verb gloss. This term is usually a noun.
This is what artists do when completing a piece of calligraphy or painting, etc. "upon completion" is baked into the word. (落 abbreviated from 落成).
Does not appear to be a signature alone... Sign, then stamp. Though the use of "また" in kokugo definitions seems a little confusing ("in addition" vs. "or else"). The stamp certainly seems integral in any example I can find.

| Comments: | Without contemporary examples to refer to, I can't be 100% confident about the glosses for sense 2 but "rudiment" and "element" don't fit my reading of the definitions in daijs and nikk. I've tagged that sense as rare but it might be obs. Nikk's example (which is supposed to be the oldest recorded use) is from 1947 but daijr's is from 1877. [embryo] was added quite recently. | Comments: | Hmm, I see. I do still think it's better to use that as a separation criterion. But I can say very little else since I have no knowledge of karuta Someone who happened to find よみて in this context will still get the information necessary from the other entry. Also I don't believe that's what [sk] is usually used for |
|
| 4. | A* 2025-07-04 16:17:02 Jai | |
| Comments: | Only reason I added it was because on googling e.g. 「競技かるた どくしゅ よみて」 there are some results giving both as readings for 読手 in the competitive karuta context, so although I always hear どくしゅ I'm not 100% sure that よみて isn't acceptable. I don't have a strong opinion on what this should mean for the entry - whether よみて should be a normal reading, search-only, or not at all - but hopefully this is useful information at least |
|
| 3. | A* 2025-07-03 20:29:17 Sombrero1 | |
| Comments: | That note is odd, can be incorporated into the glosses. よみて is in the other entry, since those are different as per your reasoning and experience in playing it shouldn't direct to this entry as well. This would blur the line again. The bidirectional xref does the job in that regard |
