ナックルフォアナックル・フォア
1. [n] {sports} Source lang: eng(wasei) "knuckle four"
▶ coxed four
▶ [expl] rowing boat for four rowers and a coxswain

History:
3. A 2025-07-28 03:25:09  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Not a "knuckle four" in English.
I asked ChatGPT: Why is a rowing four called a "knuckle four" in Japan and Korea?
Its reply:
The term “knuckle four” used in Japan and Korea to describe a rowing boat — specifically a coxed four — comes from a misinterpretation or adoption of an old English naval term, combined with local linguistic factors.
(The full explanation is very interesting, and relates to "knuckle" referring to a type of boat hull design.)

Leaning toward a split of カランコロン and カラコロ...

I've conversed with 4 different native speakers on this. The geta use is fine. Reading a book called コーヒーが冷めない内 that takes place in an old-timey kissaten. The coming and going of guests is always punctuated by one line "カランコロン" with no surrounding explanation whatsoever.

Daijs specifically highlights the sound of opening and closing a door. This detail is essential. This applies only to brass bells on a string that clank when opening a door. It would not be used for an electronic chime. It evokes a sense of nostalgia.

[3] is not in daijs, but is asserted strongly by chatgpt, and there is a *spectacular* video demo of カラコロ here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kAc0E49kao

With native speakers, カランコロン was far more recognizable both for geta and shop-bells(better said, カラコロ was unrecognizable). I think the entries could reasonably be split. In particular, カランコロン has a restr on "shop-doorbell", but NOT the corresponding sound. With a split [2] and [3] could be one sense, but but shop doorbells would not be mentioned for カラコロ.

  Comments:
That edit broke alignment with incoming xrefs (and probably also with example sentences).

Generally I don't think the ラ変動詞 sense should be in an entry together with these senses. E.g. for sense one this entry signifies the 連用形, while it signifies the 終止形 for the classical sense.

It did not, I was simply addressing the short causative.
As to references, not really. Your best reference on this will be modern standard Japanese; さす is at best understood but not used - you do not really ever see 食べさす、 燃えさす or 高めさす, etc.
The short forms that are productive are the short causative-passive される and the short potential れる.
But fortunately, you do not have to take my word for it as both of the Imabi links mention that ~さす is unacceptable for most speakers - including both quotations you pulled from them.
I will just repeat one here:
"There is also the short causative 燃えさす for 燃えさせる, but this form is usually △・X for most speakers."
The △ and X denote that 燃えさす is considered either rare/uncommon or wrong by most, respectively; and I personally suspect that much of the rare/uncommon evaluations are being influenced by dialects and archaisms.
Whichever the case, △・X denotes a low level of acceptability and productivity.
And one more quote from the second link:
"The modern さす is almost nonexistent in Standard Japanese"

Do note that this is only about the standard dialect; as mentioned before, there are other dialects in which さす is the fully productive causative and させる is nowhere be be found.

Thanks, I have not much more to add.
Just that maybe "(forms plain conjunction) and" should be split into "and; forms plain conjunction".
And I would prefer having the examples for sense 6 and 7 in the gloss with brackets instead of as a usage note. But if noone else thinks so they may as well stay like that. It doesn't hurt.

I've confined the で note to the front to stop all the duplication. I've also split the 6th sense into two and moved the "as in" examples to naotes.
I'll approve and reopen for a bit.

   > You are absolutely right to point out that っ is the 音便 stem. I apologise, I'm a bit absent-minded sometimes.
I didn't intend on having all of them as well. I have removed って and the corresponding notes.

An argument could be made for including って, いで, etc. as search-only forms, but I think that'd be stretching the purpose of the tag a bit.

In any case, I believe that the changes you have proposed in your previous take are very much relevant.
They are supported by refs and can be substantiated by examples. I think that's about all an entry in a dictionary needs.

That's it from my side for now, let's see what others think.
If there's anything else still off about the current version please say so.

PoS tags aside, I still would like the usage note reverted to its prior version, with the ~ after せ and サ変 instead of する.
Since the argumentation for that is now buried under a few walls of text, I will quote it here for reading convenience:

『サ変 was chosen over suru-class or something of the sort as it is mildly shorter and refers to the conjugation class as a whole rather than する singularly.
While す・する and サ変 are largely synonymous since the former and its compounds very likely account for 99.9% of the conjugation class, there are very few verbs that occupy that 0.1% position wherein they have the suru-class paradigm, despite having no connection to the actual suru.
Off the top of my head I can recall 御座す(おはす), 坐す(います) and まらする;the former probably began as a either a 二段 or 四段 from 座す(わす) while the latter two were originally 四段 and 二段 respectively, and only later became サ変』
(Shamelessly adding to the above, "サ変" also explicitly includes the classical す while just "する" does not; which in hindsight is far more important than the obscure verbs I dug up)
『As for the tilde, it is there to separate the stem from the suffix... Is it strictly necessary? Probably not. But personal experience tells me that if something can be interpreted wrongly, it will. And so I reckon there will be at least one person who will read "after the -nai stem of a verb and as せず for する" as ず sprouting a せ in front of it and then attaching to する as しせず』

>Jokes aside, you can take that approach - but this is entirely a matter of philosophy wherein ぬ is regarded as the flexible original and all other forms as immutable variants.
As a rule, dictionary forms are chosen primarily by pragmatism and not by any morphological criteria i.e. ぬ and ず are both inflections of the same lexeme, which we call ぬ by convention - but that does not mean that ぬ turns into ず or vice-versa, or that they do not.
You *can* posit that only ぬ inflects, but it is very hard to actually prove it.

That's a good argument. I hadn't really thought in that direction, and I doubt I could prove that.
I think I'll concede here.

I have also read the rest of your reply, but I'll refrain from engaging in further discussion on those topics.
Since it's a somewhat off-topic discussion (which I know I have started).
I'll keep it in my head as food for thought.
