| Comments: | Perhaps we should have a POS tag specifically for 接続助詞. |
| 12. | A* 2025-07-12 21:36:41 Sombrero1 | |
| Comments: | Apologies, I was looking at the から in one reference and at ながら in the others. The ref from "Japanese Linguistics_ 日本語学 -- Mark Irwin; Matthew Zisk" is irrelevant to this entry. The general point still stands though |

| Refs: | * Sankoku, Shinsen, GendaiRK, Koj, DOJG, etc. * Japanese Linguistics_ 日本語学 -- Mark Irwin; Matthew Zisk: causal clause linking conjunction . |
| Comments: | Sense three on から is definitely 接続助詞, sense one and two are 格助詞. I'll read up on 国語文法 some more when I have the time for it before I go applying tags in various entries. However, an important thing to note is, that while we only have 助詞 and 接続詞 as PoSs, the kokugos and 国語文法 in general has a 接続助詞 PoS. This makes it odd for tagging in JMdict since it is then necessary to have the combination of [prt, conj] indicate that the given sense falls under the 接続助詞 PoS. Since 接続助詞 are neither just 助詞, nor are they fully 接続詞. In that same fashion we also lack a way to indicate 副助詞. |

| Comments: | I don't think both explanatory glosses should be kept, but I'm not sure which is better. I think the first reads easier but the second is more precise (although if the note is kept, that would add enough explanation to not need the precision of the second one) Also not sure how this should interact with sense 1... but the definition is substantially different from the definition in non-competitive karuta so I guess a new sense is the best way Once this is approved I will add an entry for 送り札 (sent card) which will reference and be referenced by the new sense |

| Comments: | Context: (robbers, short story) ”if you don't comply, we will kill you, blast and こじ開ける your safe (pry it open I imagine). "prise/prize" is unrecognizable to me as US English. Since "prise open" seems chiefly UK, it seems preferable to give the "s" spelling? (or both, I guess, but I recognize neither). I think the translation of "pick" is suspect, as that strikes me as a delicate technical procedure. I suspect こじ開け on a lock is somewhat more violent. (A simple "pry open the lock" would do, as appears once in reverso at least). "pick" seems incompatible with the simple definition in daijs: すきまに物を差し込んだりして無理にあける。「戸を—・ける」 |

| Comments: | Maybe 敵陣 can have a competitive karuta sense since it already has one for shogi? I wonder about 自陣 since it only has one sense... but it would be nice to have a competitive karuta sense there as well imo As far as I can tell as a player both 敵陣 and 相手陣 are used abundantly and I can't tell if there is a difference in their frequency of use. However I can't think of any reliable way to check this since of course 敵陣 is used plenty outside competitive karuta unlike 相手陣. |

| Comments: | Anon, you need to provide some references or background to submissions. The surface meaning of this is a charge for simple bites that are served immediately at izakayas and the like. But since it's mandatory, many English publications liken it to a "cover charge". I think this practice has generated enough confusion amongst Westerners that it'd be worth including. |
