| Refs: | Tanaka: きのうウィリアムズさんとかいう人が訪ねてきました。A Mr. Williams came to see you yesterday. |
| Comments: | Looks good. My only concern is the rather common use of it to announce people. 7 of the 67 indexed Tanaka sentences have this pattern and while it sort-of fits into sense 2 with its "a (certain)", it's not really "hearsay or unconfirmed information"; it's more a formula used in such situations. I wonder if the sense can be tweaked a little to reflect that usage? |

| Refs: | daij, meikyo, gg5, prog |
| Comments: | These are all the senses in the kokugos. Sense 2 and 3 are really the same sense, but "I hear that/rumor has it", etc. only work when the sentence *ends* with とか (as in the examples in Nicolas's link) which is why I've kept them separate. Sense 4 looks similar to sense 2 except that it's not used for hearsay. Only daijs and meikyo have it as a separate sense. Daijr has a note about it. |

| Comments: | I very much agree with what non has said previously, ば is both a particle and a conjunction. | Refs: | I did not think any references would be needed, It is formally classified as a 接続助詞 just about everywhere: daijs, daijr, smk, meikyo, koj... |
| Comments: | ば's primordial function is to connect two clauses, clause A to clause B, where A is in some manner precedent to B, this should be in line with the citation you have just provided of a conjunction. Additionally, I do not see how these definitions would - or even could - be mutually exclusive: every single conjunction has a grammatical aspect to it, it must always form a syntactically subordinating or coordinating relation in between the two linked items; dismissing [3] as an omission of clause B, and with the potential exclusion of [2], ば falls into the former type. I must also bring to attention that the definition of a conjunction provided is vague and potentially problematic, for example: how does it deal with a coordinating conjunction between two nouns? ”僕と君と...”or anything following the same structure will be constituted of two words that are not particularly large units of meaning, certainly not clauses, and I do not think most would consider each a phrase. Would と cease to be a conjunction? would also または or および? This is not limited to Japanese either, you can just as easily take "Me and you..." and the same problem arises. Lastly, not classifying ば as a conjunction makes the corpus inconsistent: other terms formally classified as 接続助詞 such as と, けれども and its variants have both [conj] and [prt] on their entries; notably, なら and たら both directly derive from ば and are classed as [conj] (though the former's entry is itself a tad inconsistent). Now, as the meaning does not change even in their original forms of ならば and たらば, if ば is not a conjunction, what is it? or rather, if it is not, how are they? |

| Comments: | I'm just worried it's not clear what the difference is between 出札 and 当たり札 from the glosses. The important difference is that every time a poem is read (up to 99 times per game) there is a 出札, but there is only an 当たり札 if the card that is read is present on the field (up to 49 times per game). Perhaps with this information you can create a better concise explanation than I was able to come up with. Also, I feel like 出札 refers to any and all of the poem, the yomifuda and the torifuda, whereas 当たり札 only refers to the torifuda in question - but I guess that's a very minor detail |
| 4. | A 2025-07-10 06:24:47 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
| Comments: | That explanation seems a bit opaque. Probably best just to have a brief gloss and indicate the field. 出札 is relatively common as it's also read しゅっさつ (issuing tickets). |

| Comments: | We have the other two Street Fighter moves. If you search jmnedict entries with the [fict]/[obj] tags, we do include many in-universe terms from fiction. The bar for notability for that dictionary is pretty low, and for me inclusion in daijs+ and over a thousand n-grams is ample. (We normally would push this to the names dictionary, but the other two are in the main one, and since [spec1] entries get copied over anyway, the distinction isn't that meaningful.) |

| Refs: | Wikip: When the core is subjected to a changing magnetic field, as it is in devices that use AC current such as transformers, inductors, and AC motors and alternators, some of the power that would ideally be transferred through the device is lost in the core, dissipated as heat and sometimes noise. Core loss is commonly termed iron loss in contradistinction to copper loss, the loss in the windings. |
