| Comments: | Hi Jim, here's a quick justification for the edit on this entry and the other entry for "potentiometer" that WWWJEDIC has (this is directly in one of my fields of expertise, but even Wikipedia will tell you the story in detail): there are two completely different electric/electronic devices called "potentiometer", whereby among practitioners the more widely understood (default) meaning of "potentiometer" is "variable resistor" or "adjustable resistor", i.e., the same meaning as the (nowadays) relatively rarely used term "rheostat". The other "potentiometer" is a measuring device - "meter" as in thermometer, etc. - for electric potential (voltage) (See my related mod entry.) |

| Comments: | Both those glosses are in the relevant sense of the 役/やく entry, and do not reflect the あがり modifier. I am going to revert this entry to the gloss Marcus established in 2012, and which has lasted until now. Although あがり役 is not in any references, I see that GT and other translation systems render it as "winning hand". I think that will do. It is the only meaning that makes sense in the many cases I have examined where it is used. I do not regard it as a synonym of 役/やく. I will leave it open for a bit, but further attempts to gloss it just as "yaku" will be rejected. |

But I think we've made out that a "patent fee" is something different in the 特許料 entry. I asked chatgpt as to what the difference between a "royalty" and a "royalty fee" is. Since there must be a reason for GG5 to not have the same gloss for 特許権使用料 and 特許使用料. Chatgpt: Yes, there is a distinction between patent royalty and royalty, though the latter is a broader term. Patent Royalty: This specifically refers to payments made to a patent holder for the right to use a patented invention. These royalties are typically outlined in a patent licensing agreement and can be structured as a percentage of sales, a fixed fee per unit, or a lump sum. Royalty: This is a general term for payments made to the owner of intellectual property (IP) or natural resources in exchange for usage rights. Royalties can apply to patents, copyrights (e.g., book or music royalties), trademarks, mineral rights, or even franchise agreements. In short, all patent royalties are royalties, but not all royalties are patent royalties. So this might just be a mistake on prog's side. . |
