A veranda is an open roofed walkway/standing area attached to the side of a building.

A balcony is an elevated walkway/standing area attached to the side of a building (or attached to an interior wall).

1990 NHK study on pronunciation change, google translated for convenience:
https://www.nhk.or.jp/bunken/summary/kotoba/gimon/103.html
There are two ways to read "逆手": "gyakute" (the on-reading of "gyaku") and "sakate" (the kun-reading). When used in a figurative way, such as "take advantage of the opponent's moves," "gyakute" has traditionally been the common reading, and most dictionaries use the reading "gyakute." However, in a survey conducted by NHK in March 1990 targeting people aged 16 and over living in the Tokyo metropolitan area, over 70% of respondents said they read "take advantage of the opponent's moves" as "sakate," and subsequent surveys have also shown a trend toward more people reading it as "sakate."
For this reason, the broadcast reads "gyakute" as follows:
"Take advantage of your opponent's moves"
① Gyakute ② Sakate
Other examples of "gyakute" are as follows:
(1) "Take the reverse hand" in judo, etc. - Gyakute
(2) "Hold or hold a short sword or sword in the reverse hand" - Sakate
(3) "Reverse hand wheel" on the horizontal bar in gymnastics - Sakate

一般的には逆手は「さかて」と読むことがほとんどです。

Several comments say the same thing about the reading:
https://ja.hinative.com/questions/21864634
基本的には『逆手(さかて)』と言うことが多いと思います。
単語として『逆手(ぎゃくて)』と言う場合は、「逆手に掴む」のように、物の掴み方などに用いることはあります。
Ex. 『鉄棒を逆手(ぎゃくて)に持つ』

In Japanese martial arts, is 逆手 a valid word to describe joint lock techniques as a general group?
https://hinative.com/questions/16776481
I think 関節技 (kansetsu waza, joint locking technique) is a much more common expression. 逆手 sounds using/griping something such as a Japanese sword in an unusual manner, and does not make sense for most Japanese unless they are familiar with martial arts.

https://budojapan.com/aiki-jujutsu/gyakute01/
Gyakute-do is an unique system specializing in Gyakute Waza, or wrist/arm joint lock techniques. Everyone who read this book will notice that most of the techniques are based on wrist/arm joint locks.

The term “reverse grip” in swordsmanship refers to holding the sword, knife, or any type of bladed-edged weapon, with its blade pointing downward, which is different from the traditional grip.
  Comments:
Sorry for the length, a lot going on here.

Encountered as さかて, "turning-tables" sense. Online refs suggest さかて dominates in modern Japanese.

Conferred with young native speaker. 4th-year male college student was incredulous that this would *ever* be pronounced ぎゃくて. I asked "even in judo?"; he didn't think so, but he wasn't a judo student either. He conferred with another friend, they agreed that ぎゃくて sounded erroneous. This matches NHK's study from 1990, plus 35 years of change.

I know we don't like stacks of glosses, but [1] and [2] are materially different, and [1] usually gets its own kokugo entry. Google "逆手 鉄棒" and you'll see gymnastics, pull-up bars, children's playground equipment, etc. Quite common for what it is. [2] exists, but not so common, and critically the xrefs are different. The sword-sense [3] has a particular affinity with さかて(daijs, sankoku, NHK) and must not be read ぎゃくて, so cannot be combined with the others.

"Backhand grip" is ambiguous in tennis. I tried to find a definitive mapping for tennis, even watching youtube videos. Most common is a two-handed forehand, where 逆手 indicates the relative placement of the hands. In the video below, it's a two-handed forehand. Can you have a forehand with a backhand grip?
両手フォアの打ち方解説!両手フォア(逆手)のスピンのかけ方!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGh-d1ZF7wQ

I found no support for [5] except that it's in the dictionary quite clearly.

I removed "unexpected twist" from the figurative gloss. It seems misleading and very situationally dependent. Perhaps if you're the victim of having the tables turned on you? Doesn't seem supported by the kokugo definitions, or appear in any other refs.
