Buzzword: shikaku (English language explanation)
https://web-japan.org/trends/buzz/bz0508.html

The term, meaning "assassin," may have ominous connotations, but it quickly became one of the most popular election keywords in the wake of the dissolution of the House of Representatives in the summer of 2005. The resulting election pitted Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro against rebel lawmakers of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party who voted against a package of bills to privatize Japan's postal services, which the prime minister has been pushing, in the lower house. Koizumi not only has denied party endorsement to those of the anti-postal privatization camp but took steps to drive them out of power.

Yes, Japanese has a colloquial term for such a situation: "刺客" (shikaku), which literally means "assassin." This term is used metaphorically in politics to describe a candidate fielded by a political party to challenge and replace an incumbent within the same party.
The term gained popularity in the 2005 Japanese general election, when then-Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi sent "shikaku" candidates...

Did too much reading for the 刺客候補 entry. Refs explain the change.

Just as an observation on modern usage, on my search for a pronunciation of 刺客候補 (didn't find one), I stumbled on a broadcast on pro-Trump (親トランプ) and anti-Trump(反トランプ) candidates squaring off, along with a big pic of Trump's face with 刺客 written beside it. The race was Liz Cheney(the "traditional" Republican, now a rebel) vs Trump-backed Harriet Hageman. It was a pretty big deal in U.S. news at the time.

The device used in this broadcast to present graphics is something to be hold. Trump's face + 刺客 unfolds 5 seconds in

https://youtu.be/5kH1aC6rQ5Q?t=10

I'd note that the term "assassin" would make no sense for a candidate from an opposing party. That's just an ordinary election. The party is trying to "take out" someone who isn't toeing the line.

In traditional Japanese fishing, 囮 often refers to live bait, particularly in ayu fishing (鮎釣り, ayu-zuri), where a live ayu fish is used to attract others.
Unlike English, where "decoy" can include non-living objects (e.g., plastic duck decoys), 囮 is more commonly associated with living bait or an actual living lure in traditional contexts.

Dominated by "decoy" / "bait"
https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/おとり
  Comments:
"decoy (for hunting)", means "wooden duck" in modern English (i.e. デコイ in Japanese). Or at very least, modern decoys are assumed to be artificial. That's way off from the Japanese meaning, even if おとり might not be *strictly* 100% living.

Even the generally-modern sankoku is specific about raising a living animal for hunting: 誘い寄せるために飼っておく、同じ種類、鳥・けもの.

"stool" seems too obscure to be helpful.

For [2], reverso is dominated by "decoy" and "bait", which strike me as more useful when talking about human activities. "trap" is never used, and it strikes me as far more generic than needed here.

Here because I encountered 刺客 in the wild, pronounced しかく. Seems doubtful that 刺客候補 gets a special pronunciation preference.

sankoku has two entries for 刺客 oddly enough, and しかく points to しきゃく, which is the main entry. But furigana.info *never* gives しきゃく. Maybe sankoku is just wrong this time.

Eijiro has as kanji.

Do we have to change from [exp] to include [adj] glosses? Eijiro has a *lot* of "life-threatening XYZ" collocations (3 pages of collocations, maybe two of them are "life-threatening"). For example:

The phrase "dark doldrums" is being transliterated in Japanese as ダーク・ドルドラムズ, and since that's pretty meaningless (ドルドラムズ seems not to be a recognised 外来語 and ドルドラム is quite rare), the compound 無光無風 is being used to explain what it means.
It might be better to have an entry for ダーク・ドルドラムズ, but I m not sure either is needed or useful.
