| Comments: | Encountered the same sense that was removed 4 years back. While researching, found this resource. It aligns translations for a particular family of video games scripts. Lots of examples, "hold back"(7 examples), "holding back" (12), "take it easy"/"go easy"/"went easy on us" (10 examples). https://trailsinthedatabase.com/game-scripts?game_id=0&p=1&q=手を抜 Common in sports. Google "手を抜く" or "手を抜かない" and "スポーツ". Previous glosses don't function well in this context. ("Give it your all" = 手を抜かない is particularly apt. for sports, I think). My encounter: 契約生きている以上、お前が相手でも手を抜かないのよ "As long as my contract exists, I won't hold back, not even against you." This sense seems completely consistent with the literal kokugo definition[sankoku]: しなければならないことを(きちんと)やらない. |

| Comments: | Encountered as the related そんなに節操なしじゃない! = "I'm not that unscrupulous!" after character is accused of some very minor sexual impropriety. Edited because "unchastity" looked odd, and as an adj I don't think "unchaste" would have fit anymore. I'm moving "inconstant" to the end essentially because I wouldn't use or understand it at all, it's not in reverso or eijiro. Maybe not dated, but too erudite for me (and perhaps for a larger audience). |

| Comments: | Aligning provisionally with the xref. I read the notes, I see we kept the GG5 gloss, and that there might be nuance differences. Perhaps for women, they're just indecisive, not merely about love. In that sense, the GG5 gloss is better. But I don't think this and the xref should be translated in isolation. Either the translations should be parallel, or there should be an explicit identification as to how the nuances are different. Otherwise it just looks like we've made a mistake, and the user learns nothing about the nuance of either term. If the old GG5 gloss is preferred, I'd suggest doing something explicit with the note. Maybe something like: [note="compared to the orig. 男心と秋の空, there is a broader implication that women are fickle in general"] If you google "A Woman's Heart Is As Fickle As", you'll find the more literal "A Woman's heart is as fickle as the autumn sky". I think I prefer this one, and it's closer to the original. Google finds it in the 1985 ザ・ニホンゴ, 石川島播磨重工業株式会社 |

(by extension) Despair, profound discontent, or a similar persistent debilitating malaise of the mind, spirit, or soul that produces a decline in mental, physical, or societal health and that may culminate in death or dissolution. |
|
| Comments: | "The Sickness unto Death" is a book by Kierkegaard. If "sickness unto death" is to be a gloss, I think it needs its own sense, marked [phil]. This supposes the wiktionary definition in English is also held by 死に至る病 in Japanese. Otherwise this is a book title for jmnedict. (I certainly don't mind it here if it's famous enough, but it should be marked). If we do add a sense [2] (I am not advocating this), we probably need a note pointing at its origin and an [expl] of the meaning, since even googling "sickness unto death" + "philosophy" will not yield wiktionary's remarkable definition. You just get info about the book. |

| Comments: | There's a pretty good article in the refs, I thought some might find it interesting, and maybe helpful for this entry. It opens with: "In Japanese, do ド means "super," or "mega," or "hyper, " or "ultra," or "very." It's an intensifying prefix often used exaggeratedly." We have none of these glosses. If this is colloquial/slang, then maybe the current glosses should not just be added to, but replaced. It seems telling that none of our xrefs use any of our glosses. ド嬉しい = "Super happy", no? We've lead with ど over ド, but in keeping with trendy slang, all of the modern adult/"perverse"/vulgar xrefs strongly prefer ド. I just added ド変態. You could somewhat argue that it is A+B, but I didn't find that clear with this entry in its current form. |

|
| Comments: | First ref says kids were using this 15 years ago already. x.com shows copious examples in social media. You can search for them too, I've linked to some pretty clear photos. For メンツが揃った in particular, past-tense, I get very strong: "the gang's all here" vibes. The old crew's got together. An expression used in group photos. I get the idea that perhaps even if some members see each other, it's been some time since the *whole* group was in the same place at the same time. For what it's worth, sankoku marks the entirety of メンツ[4] as 俗[col]. I think we should have a friendly, colloquial gloss for people uniting. I like "the gang's all here". I would use that personally. I'm sure I've used "it's been a while since the whole crew got together", or something to that effect. Flipping through social media posts, there are other uses where something using "lineup" really seems more applicable. Maybe someone here has some ideas. Arguably [uk]. Surprisingly close to 50/50. |
